Suglilite is composed of potassium lithium iron manganese aluminum silicate, with a hardness of 6 to 6.5 and a density of 2.76 to 2.80 and hexagonal crystals. It is named after a Japanese geologist, Ken-ichi Sugi who discovered it in 1944. It is found in Japan and Canada, but much of the world’ s supply comes from South Africa.

Sugilite is a natural crystal with color ranging from pale lilac to deep purple. The most precious shade is a magenta-purple shade, especially the translucent form. Hot Spring baths have long been touted to have therapeutic effects which relieve or restore one’s health.  A hot spring is a spring that is produced by  the emergence of geothermally heated groundwater from the Earth’s crust. These water have energetic factors such as mineralization, radioactivity, gases and PH variations. The mineralization of these water is always closely related to the composition of the soil along which they flow or accumulate. In general, they contain iron, bromine, boron, iodine, chrome, sodium, sulfur, phosphorus, fluorine and carbon.

There are many types of hot springs, distinguished by the minerals dissolved in the water. Different minerals provide different health benefits, and all hot springs are supposed to have a relaxing effect on your body and mind.

 Taiwan,  is ranked among one of the world’s top hot spring sites, harboring a great variety of springs, including hot springs, cold springs, mud springs, and seabed hot springs.

Recently, while on one of my Taiwan trips, I headed to the Xinbeitou area, 25 minutes by MRT from Taipei, to experience a hot spring bath. The hot springs in this area are of 3 types- “green”, strongly sulfurous with water from 50 to75 degrees Celsius; “white”, containing hydrogen sulfide and at a lower temperature of 45 degrees Celsius; and reddish ferrous waters at 40 to 60 degrees Celsius. The heat and the mineral content in the water in the Beitou and Xinbeitou is said to be able to help treat chronic fatigue, muscle ache and pains, eczema, skin diseases,  arthritis, rheumatism, athlete feet and digestive problems.

I personally emerged from the hot spring bath feeling totally light and relaxed,  with a clear mind, energy level raised and a smooth skin.  It seems that a hot spring bath has the capacity to balance and harmonize our body and mind.

Next time, you are in Taipei and done with sightseeing and shopping head to Xinbeitou and experience the benefits of a hot spring bath. The Beitou Hot Spring Museum in the lovely park is also worth a visit.
